International Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles poster causes 9/11 controversy

With a couple of weeks before TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES opens in domestic theaters, the film is involved in a minor controversy. It appears that some people are not taking kindly to the new Australian poster for the movie along with the release date it will have down under which is September 11th. That coupled with the below tweet is what has set off the outcry.

While the tweet has since been taken down and the poster changed, there are still many online who are making this into a bigger deal than it needs to be. Sure, there are still countless people who are directly affected by the terrible events of 9/11, but this seems like quite a stretch. Yes, TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES takes place in New York City and yes it involves massive destruction, but it seems a tenuous connection between an exploding building and the unfortunate Australian release date.

Paramount Pictures has revised the poster to remove mention of September 11th but it does not appear the release date will be altered in any way. I highly doubt this will cause any issue with the domestic release of the film but it goes to show thirteen years is still not enough time for everyone to be comfortable with such imagery.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES hits domestic theaters on August 8th.
