Interview: Bruce Campbell on Ernie & Emma and his legendary career

Nearly one month ago, I had the chance to speak with Bruce Campbell. The interview was special because he was talking about the personal and touching new feature, Ernie & Emma. Written, directed, and starring Mr. Campbell, it is a personal story for the actor. The film centers on Ernie and his deceased wife. Before her passing, she left her husband instructions on where she’d like him to spread her remains. And this sets the widower on a personal journey. It’s a sweet story, one that feels especially heartbreaking with Campbell’s recent announcement.

The first time I met Mr. Campbell was at a book signing many years ago. Funnily enough, I’d never interviewed him. However, I had spoken to him at a small handful of events, I felt fortunate to meet this dashing fellow. Mr. Campbell has always been a part of my life. I fell in love with the Evil Dead franchise early on. I’d sneak down into the basement at three in the am and re-watch Evil Dead 2 on the regular. He has created a number of charismatic on-screen personas.

During our interview, Mr. Campbell talked openly about cancer and the trials and tribulations that come with it. It’s a terrific discussion, one that is honest, heartfelt, and engaging. Mr. Campbell is a legend. At the time of the interview, the recent news about his health hadn’t been released. If anything, it brings me hope that Ernie and Emma may help others cope with the loss of a loved one. And it was an honor to sit down with Bruce Campbell for such a thoughtful conversation.
