Every year, new teen dramas pop up with different approaches to telling the same stories. The problem is that writers often treat teen tales as less worthy of quality dialogue and plots than other shows. Sterling Point bucks that trend with great writing and a solid ensemble cast exploring a modern take on sibling rivalries and summer love compared to more generic series out there.
Created by Megan Park, Sterling Point is a heartfelt, coming-of-age drama led by 17-year-old Annie Jacobson (Ella Rubin). Raised in New York City with her twin brother (Keen Ruffalo) and loving adoptive father (Jay Duplass), Annie’s life takes a turn when she inherits her mysterious grandfather’s island in Canada. There, she finds new friends, budding romances and untold family secrets.
I spoke with three of the stars of Sterling Point about the new series. Keen Ruffalo talked about portraying an authentic brother and the challenges with acting remotely versus being on set with the rest of the cast. Amélie Hoeferle talked about portraying Ramona and how she behaves with her friends versus when she meets Annie. Ella Rubin talked about how the quality of the scripts informed her performance and what it was like performing with the recurring theme of acorns everywhere.
