Interview: Gil Birmingham talks Marshals, Yellowstone, and the fate of Thomas Rainwater

With the world of Yellowstone continuing to expand with Dutton Ranch, fans are wrapping their attention with the CBS spin-off Marshals as it comes to its finale. Led by Luke Grimes in a procedural spin on the Yellowstone formula, Marshals has blended the world of cops and criminals into the soapy melodrama of Taylor Sheridan’s original series.

The upcoming season finale of Marshals continues the plot from the first season, which centers on the Broken Rock tribe, which has taken over the land formerly owned by the Dutton family. Tribal leader Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) was targeted by an assassin in the first episode, and a new threat from a militia arises once again in the finale.

I sat down with Yellowstone star Gil Birmingham to discuss his return as Thomas Rainwater in Marshals. The actor discussed his long-running relationship with Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan and whether he consulted with him about this expansion of the franchise. Birmingham also discussed what distinguishes Marshals from Yellowstone and whether there have been any discussions of a spin-off focused entirely on Broken Rock. Check out the full interview in the embed above.

Marshals airs its season one finale on May 24th on CBS.
