Interview: Nicolas Winding Refn and Charles Melton Talk Her Private Hell

Nicolas Winding Refn has never been one to follow the formulaic path when it comes to storytelling. It was Bronson, with a stunning performance by Tom Hardy, that first gave the filmmaker attention, as did the Pusher series. Refn’s work since has been risky and bold. Whether it’s the dark and twisted The Neon Demon or the enigmatic and slick Drive, he never sticks to the formula. And his latest isn’t any different. To say that I’ve never seen anything like Her Private Hell (read our review here) would not be an understatement. The film follows Elle (Sophie Thatcher), an actress taking on a mysterious project. However, nothing is as it seems when Private K (Charles Melton) arrives on the picture.

Recently, I sat down with both Nicholas Winding Refn and Charles Melton to talk about Her Private Hell. Watching the new feature, I was slightly reminded of the world he created with The Neon Demon. Similarly, Hell takes a very surreal approach to its subject. It manages to encompass a hellish visitor, sci-fi elements, and the strange relationship that exists between Thatcher and the other members involved. If you want something unusual, you’ll find that with Hell. It’s no surprise the filmmaker had his hands on this unique experience.

When I asked Mr. Refn about the origin of the story, he told a quite incredible tale. In 2023, the filmmaker faced a serious medical emergency that left him clinically dead for over 20 minutes. Happily, he is still with us. He discussed this, as well as taking on such a unique tale. As for Charles Melton, he discussed working with the famed director and what the experience was like. And finally, Refn discussed finding the right cast to bring his viewers into Her Private Hell.

Her Private Hell opens Friday at a theatre near you.
