Renny Harlin has been quite busy over the past few years. The filmmaker who brought us Cliffhanger, The Long Kiss Goodnight, and Deep Blue Sea returns to shark-infested waters with Deep Water (read our review here). Along with the sharks, it also stars Aaron Eckhart, Ben Kingsley, and Angus Sampson. It tells the story of a flight en route to Shanghai that is forced to land in the middle of the ocean, only for the survivors to face the horrors beneath the water depths.
The new adventure also offers a perhaps unexpected name, courtesy of one of the film’s producers. Gene Simmons and Kiss are rock legends. Growing up in a small town where everyone loved Kiss, I was very aware of this man for nearly my entire life. Among his many other ventures, Simmons stepped in to help bring the adventure to life. I attended the premiere of Deep Water this past week, and the energy both Simmons and Harlin presented certainly put the audience in the mood. And frankly, the plane wreck had the packed theatre verbally weighing in on the action with glee.
Recently, I had the pleasure of speaking to both Gene Simmons and Renny Harlin about their new project. I asked the pair about taking on sharks and more. They excitedly discussed the intense plane crash and the film’s emotional core. As well as casting Simpson, Kingsley, and Eckhart. The two shared their excitement for the new adventure, especially regarding the plane crash sequence. It was quite a unique moment speaking with these two.
Deep Water is currently playing in theatres.
