Who’s ready to hit the road in the name of revenge? In the final trailer for Aleshea Harris‘ Is God Is, two sisters embark on a revenge mission to kill their father, which finds them stirring up all manner of trouble along their way to salvation. Today’s unhinged trailer features the stacked cast of Harris’ feature directorial debut, including Kara Young, Mallori Johnson, Janelle Monáe, Erika Alexander, Mykelti Williamson, Josiah Cross, and Vivica A. Fox and Sterling K. Brown.
Here’s the official synopsis for Is God Is:
“In Is God Is, two sisters embark on an epic quest for revenge, confronting a charged family history that will push them to extraordinary lengths. The film is Aleshea Harris’ directorial debut and is based on Harris’ adaptation of her award-winning play of the same name.”
Harris also produced her film with Tessa Thompson, Kishori Rajan, Riva Marker, and Janicza Bravo on board as the film’s producers. Meanwhile, the executive producers include Stacy O’Neil, Nicole King, and Kenneth Yu.
In the final trailer for Is God Is, Kara Young and Mallori Johnson receive instructions from their mother to kill their father. While the sisters contemplate their mission, they encounter faither healers, silent victims, crazed bikers, and one roadblock after another before reaching their goal. The trailer drips with style and attitude, bringing Harris’ play to life on screen in a way that gives the premise and performances new life.
Harris spoke with Essence in May to talk about putting her first feature together. When asked about how she was able to compile an all-star cast, she explained, “I knew Kara from a reading I had done. So we started narrowing things down and got down to Kara and Mallori because they had tremendous chemistry. They were able to just really work off of each other beautifully, and they were able to play a lot of nuance, which I needed for the twins. And I was thinking that it would be a good idea to surround these two breakout younger actresses with people who we might have more knowledge of, who’ve been in the game a little bit longer. And so we just approached folks, gave them the script, gave them my vision. Sometimes I would have a conversation with them and they got on board. Luckily for me, well for all of us, they were enthusiastic about the project.”
Is God Is has been on my radar since last year, and I can’t wait to check it out. The new trailer is giving me Boots Riley vibes, similar to his new film, I Love Boosters (read our review here). The cast for Is God Is is positively stacked, and I look forward to watching them play against one another in a road-trip thriller with attitude. Let’s go!
Is God Is arrives on May 15, 2026.
