Dinos never say die. Universal is moving forward with a sequel to Jurassic World Rebirth, but the studio has been searching for a new director ever since Gareth Edwards stepped away due to creative differences. The search may have led to someone with some Jurassic experience, as The InSneider has heard that J.A. Bayona, who helmed Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, is at the top of the list to return for the next installment of the franchise.
J.A. Bayona Back for Jurassic World Rebirth Sequel?
THR’s Borys Kit confirmed the news on X, saying, “J.A. Bayona may be returning to the Jurassic World franchise. The filmmaker, who directed Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom in 2018, is at the top of the list of who Universal would like to direct the follow-up to Jurassic World: Rebirth.“
Fallen Kingdom was a huge success for the studio, grossing over $1.3 billion, but it also received the worst reviews of the franchise… at least until Jurassic World: Dominion was released.
The film followed Owen (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) as they returned to Isla Nublar to save the remaining dinosaurs from a volcanic eruption, but surprise, surprise, the mercenary team accompanying them had ulterior motives. It felt like two separate movies at times, with half of the film set on the island and the other half at an estate during a dinosaur auction. It certainly had its moments, but I don’t think it’s anyone’s favourite installment of the series.
Jurassic World Rebirth Sequel
Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali are all expected to reprise their roles from Jurassic World Rebirth, with David Koepp returning after writing the previous film. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but expect the usual helping of dinosaurs and mayhem.
Although Rebirth received a better reception than Dominion (those locusts…), it still wasn’t the grand return to form that fans were hoping it would be. In fact, our own Chris Bumbray thought it was one of the biggest disappointments of the summer. “While Rebirth isn’t as ridiculous as Dominion, it’s likely a duller film overall—with less action, fewer scenes for its stars, and a flat visual style,” he said. “It’s a shame, because Gareth Edwards is a talented filmmaker, but this one feels more like his lifeless Godzilla reboot than any of his more imaginative efforts.” You can check out the rest of his review right here.
How would you feel about J.A. Bayona returning to direct the Jurassic World Rebirth sequel?
