James Cameron doesn’t wait for technology; he invents it and makes a $2.7 billion movie with it. I would trust a man like Cameron, on the cutting edge of technology, knows a thing or two about upcoming trends and whether or now they are here to stay. If you’ve been keeping your ear to the ground as of late, you might have heard about virtual reality and how some people want to be the next step when it comes to filmmaking. Cameron has now made it clear that he’s not one of those people.
Oculus Rift is an upcoming virtual reality head-mounted display recently purchased by Facebook and Cameron who was speaking at the WSJD Live as asked about virtual reality:
There seems to be a lot of excitement around something that, to me, is a yawn, frankly. The question that always occurred to me is, when is it going to be mature, when is it going to be accepted by the public at large, when are people going to start authoring in VR and what will that be?
He didn’t hate on it constantly though, adding it had a “a good price point” and “a good display” but didn’t think it would ever be used in movies:
What will the level of interactivity with the user be other than just ‘I can stand and look around.’ If you want to move through a virtual reality it’s called a video game, it’s been around forever.
Speaking of video games, that’s where this VR belongs if you ask me. Theaters are busy enough, I don’t need this headache now too.
