James Cameron’s The Abyss 4K Finally Coming to Blu-ray

James Cameron's THE ABYSS looks like it's finally coming to Blu-ray with a 4K restoration. And it's about time as you can't even stream the movie in hi-def. But now Cameron's go-to colorist Skip Kimball indicates that a newly-remastered version of the sci-fi drama is headed our way soon. He even hashtags 4K and Blu-ray in his Instagram post. There's no word on whether or not this 4K restoration will be the theatrical cut of the film or the extended version. But no worries, we will make sure to keep up to date with the restoration and pass along word once we hear anything further.

For those who might not know, Cameron's sci-fi drama followed Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio as

formerly married petroleum engineers who still have some issues to work out. They are drafted to assist a gung-ho Navy SEAL (Michael Biehn) with a top-secret recovery operation: a nuclear sub has been ambushed and sunk, under mysterious circumstances, in some of the deepest waters on Earth.

I'm really excited about this news considering I think THE ABYSS is arguably Cameron's best film. I love how it uses all the technology and big-budget FX one expects from Cameron, but he tells the story on such a simple human level. The plot surely could have lent itself to horror movie tropes for days and weeks and years, but Cameron side-steps all of that for an almost young Steven Spielberg approach. I dig it and can't wait to own it on Blu-ray.

How about you? Let us know below!
