Last week, it was announced that James Gunn would serve as co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran. But just because James Gunn trading in Guardians for Gotham doesn’t mean there’s bad blood between him and Kevin Feige at Marvel.
In a mature attempt to quell any rumors that there could be a major Marvel and DC showdown, James Gunn took to social media, tweeting, “Not only do I love Kevin, he was the 1st person I told after I did the deal with DC ( @JohnCena was the 2nd). Contrary to popular belief, a dollar less for Marvel is not a dollar more for DC. DC & Marvel have the common goal of keeping the theater-going experience vibrant & alive!”
Last week, Kevin Feige threw his support behind James Gunn, simultaneously championing his close friend and plugging Gunn’s final two Marvel projects. “We have a wonderful thing called the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special coming out. We have a wonderful thing called Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 coming out in May. How he’ll have any time to work on DC until May I don’t know, but once he does have the time I’ll be very excited. I’ll be first in line.” The 40-minute Holiday Special arrives on Disney+ on November 25th, while the Guardians trilogy will conclude on May 5th, 2023.
James Gunn wasn’t just a Marvel guy. He also previously helmed DC’s The Suicide Squad, in addition to creating The Peacemaker.
Of course, there must be some rivalry because Marvel and DC are the top names in comic books and superhero movies. It’s nice to see that it will come friendlier, with healthy competition at the forefront.
