As the search for the next Superman picks up faster than a speeding bullet, James Gunn has yet again taken to social media, showing he’s able to leap internet speculation with a single tweet.

Responding to the ever-growing casting rumors of who is closest to landing the role of Superman, James Gunn took to Twitter to…comment about not commenting. In a post from this weekend, the DC head wrote, “For all of you asking, I would never comment on who is or isn’t AUDITIONING for a role. That’s the actor’s business only & isn’t something I’d make public unless they did it first after the fact (like @GlennHowerton or @ZacharyLevi having auditioned for Star-Lord & being top choices). For now, only one person has been CAST in Superman: Legacy, and it isn’t any of the regular players in the Superman world”, capped off by a merman emoji. Howerton has previously been tied (by fans, at least) to the role of Reed Richards in Marvel’s upcoming Fantastic Four movie, while Levi landed Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel–uh, we mean Shazam!–for DC.

Reports came out over the weekend that David Corenswet (who starred opposite Mia Goth in Pearl) could be the next man to don the cape, edging out names like Jacob Elordi, Tom Brittney and Andrew Richardson, although these individuals apparently never got far in the process. Nicholas Hoult (Renfield), meanwhile, looks to be the frontrunner for Lex Luthor, while names that have circled Lois Lane incklude Phoebe Dyvenor (Bridgerton), Rachel Brsonahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) and Samara Weaving (Scream VI). While Gunn will keep mum over those that auditioned, he did basically confirm that superdog Krypto would be in the next Superman movie, titled Superman: Legacy. Screen tests are expected to begin sometime after Memorial Day.

Superman: Legacy will hit theaters on July 11th, 2025, launching the movie portion of DC’s “Gods and Monsters” chapter that is hoping to put them in proper competition with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Gunn was able to complete writing his Superman script before the WGA strike.
