The long-awaited sequel to director Roland Emmerich's 1996 alien invasion blockbuster INDEPENDENCE DAY has finally gone into production, a fact which producer Dean Devlin has celebrated by posting a picture from the set on his Instagram. With Devlin in the picture: Jeff Goldblum, reprising the role of computer whiz David Levinson.
I was never a huge fan of INDEPENDENCE DAY, and yet there's something comforting about the image.
Emmerich is back at the helm for INDEPENDENCE DAY 2, and also wrote the inital screenplay with Devlin. James Vanderbilt, Carter Blanchard, and Nicolas Wright have written subsequent drafts.
Goldblum's fellow returning cast members include Vivica A. Fox, Judd Hirsch, Bill Pullman, and Brent Spiner. They're being joined by Charlotte Gainsbourg, Liam Hemsworth, Joey King, Maika Monroe, DeObia Oparei, Jessie Usher, and Sela Ward.
INDEPENDENCE DAY 2 is set to reach theatres just in time for Independence Day next year, with a release date of June 24, 2016.
