It was announced earlier this year that Dino Montiel (A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints) had signed on to direct a biopic of the late, great Gene Wilder, and almost immediately, fans called upon Jeremy Allen White to play the iconic comedian.
Would Jeremy Allen White Play Gene Wilder?
The role hasn’t been cast yet, but it’s hard to deny that White would be a great choice. Not only is he a fantastic actor, but the resemblance is rather uncanny. You can almost believe the two are related in some fashion, but they aren’t.
While chatting with Craig Melvin on Today, White was asked whether playing Wilder is something he would actually want to do.
“Absolutely, it would be my honor,” White said. “‘Young Frankenstein’ is one of my earliest film memories. ‘Blazing Saddles’ — he was a genius, it would be an honor. I love him, I’ve always loved him. I need the call.“
You hear that, Montiel? He’s waiting.
The Social Reckoning
White will soon be seen starring alongside Mikey Madison in The Social Reckoning, Aaron Sorkin’s follow-up to The Social Network. The film follows Facebook data engineer Frances Haugen (Madison) as she grows concerned over how users are becoming increasingly radicalized, and leaks thousands of the company’s internal documents to Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz (White).
Unfortunately, the film hasn’t been embraced as much as its predecessor. Reviews have been mixed, including one from our own Chris Bumbray, who still found plenty to like despite the film falling short in other areas.
“I must admit that I got invested in The Social Reckoning,” he wrote. “Even if his movies are overwritten, Sorkin does have a fundamental understanding of the fractured world we live in today, and there are moments in the film that illustrate how normal people are being radicalized online by a constant negative feedback loop that are chilling. It’s not a masterpiece like The Social Network, but it’s still a more than decent movie on its own merits, and the actual scenes set within Facebook (or Meta, as it’s now called) are masterful.” You can check out the rest of his review right here.
