Jeremy Renner’s physician provides more details on injuries, recovery

Jeremy Renner has kept his fans in the loop through every step of his recovery process, from his initial hospital stay to literal steps (with the aid of a pretty cool anti-gravity machine) to his recent red carpet reemergence. And while Renner has been transparent with both his followers and the media, he has really only been able to offer one side of the ordeal. Now, Christopher Vincent, a chiropractic sports physician who worked closely with the actor, has detailed the pain he went through in a way that maybe even Renner couldn’t.

“I mean, it’s bad enough with one of those traumas,” said Vincent, citing the 30+ broken bones Renner suffered. “The fracture through his tibia was so severe that that alone…mentally you can’t deal with that much pain…When you’ve got 30 of those, your body is just sending pain signals to your brain from every part of your body. You can’t override them.” Vincent added to this, saying, “You’re mentally just trying to quiet them down. It’s happening 24 hours a day, so it’s not like he gets a reprieve when he’s sleeping. It doesn’t sleep, so it’s affecting your sleep, and that lack of sleep is affecting your recovery.”

By noting the mental strain and exhaustion Renner experienced during his recovery, Vincent touches on an aspect that doesn’t often get the attention it should. Building on this, it’s even not just physical and mental wear and tear that such an accident would bring, but also emotional. Jeremy Renner recently told Diane Sawyer that during the traumatic moment, he was awake and “writing down notes in my phone to–last words to my family.”

While Jeremy Renner’s recovery is far from complete, the progress he has shown over the past four months is remarkable and, yes, like something only a superhero could do. In addition to interviews with Sawyer and Jimmy Kimmel, Renner made an appearance at the premiere of his new Disney+ series, Rennervations, marking another shining milestone in his healing. The four-episode documentary series is a pet project of Renner’s and one that he continued promoting on social media just one month after his January 1st accident.
