JFK limited series in development at Netflix

Variety has reported that Netflix is developing a limited series based on the life of U.S. President John F. Kennedy. According to sources, Netflix views the JFK series as an American version of The Crown, the acclaimed historical drama about the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. The sixth and final season of the series will debut later this year.

The JFK series will be based on Fredrick Logevall’s JFK: Coming Of Age In The American Century, 1917-1956, which is the first installment of a two-volume Kennedy biography. Killers of the Flower Moon co-writer Eric Roth is set to write and executive produce the series for Netflix, with Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping of Chernin Entertainment also executive producing. Netflix is currently looking for a showrunner to take on the series.

The story of John F. Kennedy has been portrayed many times over the decades, with PT 109 (a war movie about Kennedy’s service during World War II) even being released just a few months before his assassination. The biography on which the series will be based covers Kennedy’s life from his birth up to his time as the junior senator from Massachusetts. Much like The Crown, the series could involve different actors playing JFK throughout his life, depending on how long the series is expected to last.

Speaking of The Crown, JFK actually appeared in the second season as played by Michael C. Hall. It was recently announced that the final season of the series will premiere in two parts, with the first four episodes dropping on Netflix on November 16th, followed by the final six episodes launching on December 14th.
