When it comes to STAR WARS: EPISODE VII, I want J.J. Abrams to go all out, but do it right. If he is going to use 3D, it better be shot in 3D and not post-converted. And, if this new rumor turns out to be true, he better shoot in IMAX rather than project the movie on the big screens that pass for IMAX these days. A quote from IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond makes it sound as if Abrams may be shooting some sequences of STAR WARS: EPISODE VII in the large format which would make for some epic viewing when the film hits theaters.
Gelfond is quoted as saying this:
“We are talking to J.J. Abrams [team] now about the next Star Wars being used with partly IMAX cameras.”
If any movie series is begging for a massive IMAX treatment, it is STAR WARS. Abrams has voiced that he wants STAR WARS: EPISODE VII to feel more real and intends to use as many practical effects as possible. If we can do without the overindulgence of CGI that plagued the prequels, all the better.
After seeing Christopher Nolan‘s IMAX sequences in his DARK KNIGHT trilogy, I am waiting for another big studio film to take that chance. Disney already has a guaranteed blockbuster, even if STAR WARS: EPISODE VII ends up being hot garbage. But, I trust that Abrams will do everything he can to make it great and going with IMAX is another good decision.
I would imagine that when the formal press release comes out touting STAR WARS: EPISODE VII’s cast and official title that we will see the IMAX and 3D tags right there is well. Hopefully we hear that news soon.
