Joel Kinnaman thinks the Suicide Squad sequel may begin filming next year

Despite David Ayer's SUICIDE SQUAD remaining as a continued source of consternation for comic book film fans, there's no denying that the villain-led ensemble adventure was a commercial success. It's true. When it comes to the almighty dollar, it simply doesn't matter if you thought the film was poorly edited, or that Jared Leto's Joker was an affront to the very nature of the character. The bottom line is that $745.6 million is an impressive worldwide showing, and so long as there's room in DC's schedule, you can count on there being another SUICIDE SQUAD film down the road.

Another person who's optimistic about a SUICIDE SQUAD sequel is Rick Flag actor Joel Kinnaman, who in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, told the entertainment news outlet that, "As far as I know they’re writing the script, and I think the plan is to shoot it sometime in 2018, but that could change. I think I'll definitely come back for it." Then, when asked about who he would like to see helm the inevitable (and some would say anticipated) sequel, Kinnaman said, "Ultimately, I'd love for David Ayer to direct it, but if he doesn't want to direct it then someone who is great with character and that's able to ground the story and maybe put these characters in a more normal situation. It would be really interesting to see these crazy characters interact with regular people as well."

Eh. With all due respect to Mr. Kinnaman, I think that sounds like an awful idea. The last two things I would want for a SUICIDE SQUAD sequel is for Ayer to return as the film's director or for the characters to be placed in a "more normal situation." When it comes to DC's "worst of the worst" joining forces as an anti-heroic super squadron, I would like to see DC to use this property to embrace the stranger, darker side of their universe. Again, this is just my opinion, but I think tasking the misfit team with venturing into uncharted waters, and getting as far away from "normal" as possible would be the way to go.

Brushing aside my negativity, there are still plenty of people out there who would love for there to a follow up to SUICIDE SQUAD. To them I say right on! There's no telling what sort of hijinks the group could get up to in a sequel, and, as always, I hope for the best when it comes to any comic book-related film hitting the big screen. Here's hoping that the next SUICIDE SQUAD film brings the noise!

SUICIDE SQUAD is available via Digital, DVD, and Blu-Ray formats right now.
