Oh to travel to a parallel universe and see the insane films that might populate their DVD library.
One of those flicks could very well have been BATMAN TRIUMPHANT if the audiences in that universe were mentally defective enough to have thought BATMAN AND ROBIN was good. The third film in a Schumacher trilogy almost existed, as early buzz around BATMAN AND ROBIN was that is was A-OK, and so plans were set forth as to a possible plot.
It was going to revolve around the Scarecrow making Batman hallucinate some of his old enemies, like Jack Nicholson’s Joker who was technically still under contract at the time. What a sight that would have been.
Schumacher wanted none other than Nicolas Cage to play the Scarecrow role, and as you’ll recall, Cage was also going to play Superman in an aborted Tim Burton variant. Guess the man has a magic death touch for all superhero films that aren’t motorcycle themed.
As for what Schumacher did to poor Batman with his movies?
“I have awards for selling more Batman toys than anyone in the world.” In regards to “Batman and Robin,” he was convinced he made “the wrong choice” but says, “I did my job. It was more family friendly and it sold a lot of toys, and it supported the Warner Bros. stores. But I did disappoint a lot of fans.”
