John Wick writer Derek Kolstad joins Falcon and Winter Soldier series

The folks over at Marvel are hard at work on their new slate of limited series around characters in the MCU, with perhaps the most eyes on the series centering around Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) and Sam Wilson/Falcon, who is also the recently-anointed Captain America (Anthony Mackie). The six-part series from showrunner-director Kari Skogland (THE HANDMAID’S TALE) is moving along well, and as the team grows it just got some additional firepower in the writers' room in JOHN WICK writer-creator Derek Kolstad, who may want to add a few good dogs to the story.

The Wrap got the goods that Kolstad had been brought on board the series, joining writer Malcolm Spellman (EMPIRE), who had so far been the only writer credited on the upcoming series. Not much else is known about the story they’re developing, but we do know actors Emily VanCamp and Daniel Bruhl will be reprising their roles as Sharon Carter and Helmut Zemo. The series is set to hit the streaming service Disney+ in a little over a year in August 2020.

The FALCON & WINTER SOLDIER series is only one of several shows that Disney and Marvel are developing for the streaming service, including LOKI with Tom Hiddleston, WANDAVISION with Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen, and one for Hawkeye/Ronin with Jeremy Renner. While meant for the streaming service Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige assures these series will have “ramifications that will be felt both through the other Disney+ series we’re producing and our features on the big screen.”

Now, we have no idea what this show will do with these two characters and how their storylines will factor into the MCU, but based on the current cast and where things were left off with ENDGAME we can play the speculation game. The series will likely follow Wilson as he accepts the mantle of Captain America, while also developing a closer partnership with Winter Soldier, who has been working through his own issues for a while. Perhaps Zemo will break from his imprisonment we saw him in in CIVIL WAR, and Carter will also provide some backup for the heroes like in past CAPTAIN AMERICA movies.

Kolstad has proven he can craft an action scene on the page and develop unique worlds for them to exist in, so his services will be of much use going forward. He and Spellman hopefully have a clear idea of where to take these characters, who no doubt have a big impact on the greater MCU and give them a story filled with drama and high-octane action.
