Jon Favreau reveals title, synopsis for new Star Wars TV series

Things may be slowing down for the STAR WARS movies, but things on the TV front are just starting to go into hyperdrive. Filmmaker Jon Favreau (IRON MAN, JUNGLE BOOK) has teased his SW series in the past and has now taken to Instagram to reveal the title of the show – THE MANDALORIAN – and give a brief synopsis. And, in case you were wondering, yes, there are a few classic characters who get name dropped.

Without further ado, here is the synopsis:

After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.

In SW history, the planet Mandalore is home to a warrior class of people who often fought against the Jedi. They were known for wearing a certain, stylish brand of armor, as seen worn by the likes of both Jango and Boba Fett. We don’t hear much about the planet or its people in the main series of films, but the animated show STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS covers it much more extensively.

Little else is known about this new show, other than it will stream on the upcoming Disney app along with some other original content. Favreau confirmed back in May that the show would take place seven years after the end of RETURN OF THE JEDI, and would use the same tech he used on JUNGLE BOOK. Some time back we heard rumors that GAME OF THRONES actor Pedro Pascal was being courted to lead the show, but nothing has come of that. Some speculation that can come of this is that taking place between the events of RETURN OF THE JEDI and THE FORCE AWAKENS means that we aren’t likely to see the presence of Boba anywhere near this show, that is unless he escaped the Sarlacc pit when no one was looking…

So, yeah, I'm quite down for this. It seems like Favreau is going for some type of low-key space Western, which sounds like it could be fun. We'll know more in the next few months as we near the 2019 launch of the Disney streaming app, which will include some Marvel shows as well. Plan to take some days off from work for the app goes live.
