Jonathan Frakes to direct episodes of Star Trek: Discovery

According to Entertainment Weekly, it seems Jonathan Frakes – a.k.a. Commander Riker on STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION – will direct episodes of the upcoming STAR TREK: DISCOVERY. This wouldn't be the first time Frakes has directed episodes of STAR TREK, as he had previously on TNG, DEEP SPACE NINE, and VOYAGER, as well as the best TNG film FIRST CONTACT (and one of its worst with INSURRECTION).

Overall, I think this is good news. I think Frakes is a solid director, especially when given good material. Even INSURRECTION had decent character moments and action beats (it was mainly the thin, subpar script that sank it). So as long as the writing is on par in this new series, I think it will be good to have someone with prior knowledge of STAR TREK behind the helm. Merging the old with the new (because I doubt he's going to abandon the more Abrams-esque aesthetic of the new series). So I'm hopeful.

But what do you Schmoes think? Either way, sound off below!

Meanwhile, with all the delays and missed start dates, it's hard to be optimistic, but apparently STAR TREK: DISCOVERY will finally premiere on the streaming service CBS: All Access October 2017.
