Jude Law teases Sherlock Holmes 3 story details

It’s been almost seven years since we saw Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law gear up and solve some mysteries as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson – which is a bit heartbreaking given how they do an exemplary job portraying the dynamic duo. But they are indeed coming back for a third go-around, and Law recently teased that the movie's story will focus on the fact that partners have been apart for so long.

Law was speaking to EW about his slew of big projects coming up – including his work as Albus Dumbledore in FANTASTIC BEASTS 2 and as Mar-Vell in CAPTAIN MARVEL – and he was asked if he could reveal any details about the long-awaited threequel. He didn’t reveal much, but he did say the movie continue to explore the relationship between Holmes and Watson.

We hope to propel the story forward. As always, the essence of the story is their codependency. We’re going to examine — since it’s been several years since we’ve seen them — we’re going to play up the fact that they haven’t seen each other for a long time either.

The first SHERLOCK HOLMES from Guy Ritchie came out in 2009 and made an unexpectedly massive $524 million worldwide and earned Downey a Golden Globe win for Best Actor. The sequel followed in 2011, doing better with $545 million around the world. A third outing would seem logical after the two movies made a combined $1 billion, but the actors have been busy with their own projects, especially Downey with the slew of Marvel movies he’s done since the second HOLMES. But the star seems to be back in the Homles spirit, and he recently teased the next outing on Twitter.

Although the Benedict Cumberbatch/Martin Freeman version will always be my favorite modern iteration of the classic duo, I have a ton of fun watching the Downey/Law movies every now and again. The third outing will be welcomed with open arms on my end, and exploring their relationship even further, possibly ending in some sort of trilogy-closer, sounds like a perfect next step. Or, who knows, maybe this will be the start of new, consistently-released run of movies. Downey may have a lot of time on his hands after AVENGERS 4, if you get my meaning.

SHERLOCK HOLMES 3 is set for Christmas 2020.
