Karl Urban on Skurge’s pact with the devil in Thor: Ragnarok

I've mentioned before how the previous THOR movies didn't exactly strike my fancy. Despite loving Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, and the rest of the THOR gang, as well as the world they occupy, neither THOR nor THOR: THE DARK WORLD really got my blood pumping or fully embraced the cosmic potential of the characters. I'm hopeful that the upcoming THOR: RAGNAROK will prove that the third time is indeed the charm, as it's looking like the colourful, intergalactic THOR adventure I've always wanted. The Taika Waititi flick will be bringing a whole new host of cosmic characters along for the ride, including Karl Urban as Skurge.

While speaking with TrekMovie during the Star Trek Las Vegas convention, Karl Urban teased a little about his THOR: RAGNAROK role.

My character is operating the Bifrost device and suddenly Cate Blanchett  walks through the Bifrost and I very astutely realized I either joined her or die. So my character is a survivalist. The journey of Scourge is really “OK, now you made a pact with the devil and it comes with a price.” That price is constantly upped through the movie and that is his journey.

Urban wouldn't spill anything else, other than to say that THOR: RAGNAROK is "going to be good." What else would he say? But in this case, I absolutely want to believe that it's true. It's interesting to note that Urban mentions operating the Bifrost, the magical rainbow bridge which connects Asgard with the other realms, which is typically operated, and closely guarded, by Heimdall (Idris Elba). Perhaps Heimdall is otherwise occupied or missing when Hela (Cate Blanchett) comes calling. Skurge aligning himself with Hela as a matter or survival also prepares us for a character who may not be quite as evil as we've been led to believe.

The official synopsis for THOR: RAGNAROK:

In Marvel Studios’ ‘Thor: Ragnarok’, Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok—the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization—at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela. But first he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger—the Incredible Hulk!

THOR: RAGNAROK will hit theaters on November 3, 2017.
