The Guardian is reporting that French music producer Kavinsky was found dead at his home in Paris following a concerned emergency call from his neighbor. It is suspected that the cause of death is from a stroke after the producer had reportedly complained about headaches for several days. A police source told French newspaper Le Figaro that Parisian authorities are currently investigating other possible causes, but there are “no suspicious elements” found at his home.
Kavinsky’s real name is Vincent Belorgey. The artist became a success in the electronic music scene that took off in France following the popularity of Daft Punk and similar music acts. Emmanuel Macron would pay a tribute to the late star by saying that Kavinsky was “a source of French pride forever.” Kavinsky gained much acclaim from his song “Nightcall,” which was featured on the Drive soundtrack. In fact, “Nightcall” was such a popular hit that Kavinsky would perform the track during the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris back in 2024, along with the French band Phoenix providing background and Belgian pop singer Angèle was on vocals.
Kavinsky’s career would really take off in the mid-2000s. His debut single, “Testarossa Autodrive,” would become a banner track on the “blog house” scene, which gave way to other French artists like Justice and SebastiAn. Justice’s “Genesis” would notably become a needle drop moment in the final action sequence of John Wick: Chapter 4, which took place in Paris. Kavinsky would be signed to the label Record Makers, with whom he released five EPs and two albums.
2010’s “Nightcall” would feature the vocals of Brazilian singer Lovefoxxx. It was also co-produced with Daft Punk member Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo. It’s melodic sound was the establishing techno ballad mood set for Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive. It has been streamed more than half a billion times on Spotify alone, with another 350 million in YouTube plays. It reached the French Top 10 on release, with the version performed at the Olympics reaching No 3.
According to The Guardian, “His debut album Outrun sketched out the grand concept for Belorgey’s Kavinsky alter ego – a young man who crashes a Ferrari Testarossa in the 80s and returns zombie-like in the 00s – and it reached No 2 in the French album charts. He followed it with Reborn, in 2022.”
