Keanu Reeves is not afraid in this international trailer for 47 Ronin

Another opportunity to sell you on 47 RONIN has come via this new international trailer. Will it work this time? The story is based on the forty-seven ronin, a group of samurais who avenged their master in 18th-century Japan. However, this version is heavy on the fantasy elements depicting battles with demons and witches. I wasn’t sure what to think when I saw the first trailer, but this one definitely nabbed my interest.

Here it is:

Synopsis:

After a treacherous warlord kills their master and banishes their kind, 47 leaderless samurai vow to seek vengeance and restore honor to their people. Driven from their homes and dispersed across the land, this band of Ronin must seek the help of Kai (Reeves)—a half-breed they once rejected—as they fight their way across a savage world of mythic beasts, shape-shifting witchcraft and wondrous terrors. As this exiled, enslaved outcast becomes their most deadly weapon, he will transform into the hero who inspires this band of outnumbered rebels to seize eternity. Helmed by director Carl Rinsch (The Gift).

I’m grateful that the studio decided to bring in Japanese actors like Rinko Kikuchi, Tadanobu Asano, and Hiroyuki Sanada. There is a tendency to bring in American actors to a project like this to flash big names in order appeal to audiences. I’m definitely optimistic about the route that this could go especially since Reeves has been so invested in it along the way.

47 RONIN hits theaters on December 26, 2013.
