Ken Watanabe the latest on Akira’s wish-list? Will he play The Colonel?

Can’t really stand these “so and so are up for,” “they’ve been offered,” “x,y, and z are testing for” stories, but hey, it’s Thanksgiving eve, news is moving slower than your fat drunk uncle will be about 24 hours from now.

Was that harsh? Felt a bit harsh.

So far, a number of names have been “courted” for the live-action AKIRA remake, coming to us courtesy of Warner Bros. and director Jaume Collet-Serra. We’ve heard Gary Oldman, Helena Bonham Carter (below), Kristen Stweart, Garrett Hedlund, Michael Pitt, Paul Dano and more…none of which has resulted in an actual offer thus far. Have we reason to believe otherwise with this next name?

Twitch has it the great Ken Watanabe is been eyed for the role of The Colonel, the role previously thought to be Gary Oldman’s. Watanabe has a good relationship with the studio (most of his American films have been Warner’s), and certainly the type of range to perform any part well, much less one from a story he may know well.

But take note, as for the others, no official offers have been made…certainly none accepted. All we can do is voice our approval or disapproval of Watanabe for the pivotal role. I can’t imagine anyone disliking the man, dude keeps his performances pretty reserved. Dude’s a natural, so I can’t see him doing any wrong.

Thoughts?
