In case you couldn’t already tell (here and here), I am greatly anticipating next year’s MY BLOODY VALENTINE remake and I’m not ashamed to admit it. Hence, I’d like to report on a slightly different cast announcement. It appears the Kerr Smith (who we already knew is a part of the film) will be playing the role of Axel Palmer. I’m sure you remember Smith (above) from his previous genre credits: playing the dick in FINAL DESTINATION and the vampire-fighter in THE FORSAKEN.
I thought this was a rather interesting announcement because the character of Axel Palmer factored pretty heavily into the original VALENTINE and although I have no problems with Smith handling the role, I am a little surprised that the creators would use the exact same name for the remake. I mean, I know that “Axel Palmer” is a cool name, but there are some secrets about the character in the original that are best to not be spoiled. No other character names listed are an exact match to those in the original (except possibly “Sarah”). Hopefully, the remake has something at least a little different in mind for “Axel” as well as everyone else. Aw, who am I kidding, I’d want to see it regardless for the nostalgia factor as well as the potentially splatterrific 3-D aspect!
The rest of the cast rounds out with Jensen Ackles (SUPERNATURAL), Jaime King (THE TRIPPER, below), Kevin Tighe, Marc Macaulay, Betsy Rue, William Kania, and the man, the legend, Tom Atkins (NIGHT OF THE CREEPS). VALENTINE 3-D, from director Patrick Lussier, is set to open January 23, 2009.
