The Marvel Cinematic Universe has—for the most part—been a box office juggernaut for the last two decades, but recent years have certainly seen a slip in the franchise. If you’re starting to think that Marvel might not be around much longer, don’t tell Kevin Feige, as the Marvel Studios president recently revealed that he’s got movies planned up until 2042.
MCU All Day
While speaking with Chinese media, Feige teased (via translation) just how far ahead they’re planning the next phases of the MCU.
“Our plan is… I haven’t told anyone this yet… In the Marvel Studios conference room, we have just mapped out movies all the way through 2042,” he said. “Will we make it to 2042? Who knows? Will those exact movies get made? Who knows? But this is how we incrementally navigate and plan the vast repository of potential stories from the comics.“
That’s over 15 years’ worth of potential projects, but even Feige isn’t sure whether they will actually get made.
The Mutant Saga
It remains to be seen what the MCU will bring after Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, but Feige added that the X-Men will be a major part of it.
Feige said, “We are constantly changing and evolving, but having a guiding light helps us act with greater purpose… especially with the X-Men—there have already been 10 movies; some were very, very good, and some didn’t quite live up to their promise. How do we lay out the ‘Mutant Saga’ in a truly grand way?“
“Getting the rights to the X-Men wasn’t just about… say, Wolverine, who is an extraordinary character. Teaming him up with Deadpool was great, but the X-Men are far more than just Wolverine or that initial roster,” he said. “At its core, it’s a universe—a multi-phase saga in its own right. A lot of that is what we are currently working toward.“
Avengers: Secret Wars Will Streamline the MCU
The Multiverse Saga has taken us to many different universes and realities, and for many fans, it’s become a bit too much. But Feige teased that Secret Wars will be something of a fresh start.
“Avengers 5 and Avengers 6 are heavily inspired by the Marvel Comics storylines Time Runs Out and Secret Wars. So—as is tradition—the comics provide major guidance for the movies we want to make,” he said. “We actually want to accomplish two things: first, to wrap up storylines that began long before Iron Man, including the original X-Men characters. Second, to simultaneously set the stage for the future. Endgame was truly an ending, after which we tried and experimented with many new things. But Avengers 6 will be a beginning. It will establish a streamlined, simplified, single universe for us to follow. Some elements will feel familiar, but many, many things will be brand new.“
