Although production kicked off on BLACK WIDOW last month, nothing "official" has been announced at this point, making it a little hard for Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige to comment on the project. However, io9 caught up with the Marvel chief during a SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME event and asked him how the Black Widow prequel (something else which hasn't been officially confirmed) could help move the Marvel Cinematic Universe story forward during its next phase.

"There’s a method to the madness," Feige explained. "There’s always a method and doing things in an unexpected way is something we find fun. There are ways to do prequels that are less informative or answer questions you didn’t necessarily have, and then there are ways to do prequels where you learn all sorts of things you never knew before." Feige pointed to Better Call Saul as the perfect example of a prequel done correctly.

I look at Better Call Saul as a wonderful example of a prequel that almost completely stands on its own apart from Breaking Bad because it informs you about so many things you didn’t know about before. So time will tell which way we’ve gone with a supposed Black Widow movie.

With Marvel Studios returning to Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con in a month, it's likely that we'll finally get some concrete details regarding BLACK WIDOW. Scarlett Johannson is obviously onboard to reprise her role of Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, a character she has played since 2010's IRON MAN 2, and will join O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid's Tale), David Harbour (HELLBOY), Florence Pugh (FIGHTING WITH MY FAMILY), and Rachel Weisz (THE FAVOURITE). Cate Shortland (LORE) is directing BLACK WIDOW from a script by Jac Schaeffer (CAPTAIN MARVEL).
