Man, I’ve been a fan of Kevin Smith and his flicks since spinnin’ clerks on a continuous loop with buddies back in the 8th grade. Perspicacity, biotches!
It’s with no hidden thrill then to write about his first foray into our genre, RED STATE, a harrowing look at the Bible belt’s extreme fundamentalism. It was only a couple weeks back we caught first glimpse of the unnerving one-sheet for the film (seen right), but today we have something a little different. An audio-advertisement? Well, sort of…
Dovetailing nicely into this year’s election cycle, Smith has taken to what he does best to drum up a little awareness for his new flick. Talk. In a weekly podcast aptly titled “Red State of the Union,” Smith continues to embrace social media in a way few other filmmakers do. He’ll take to his trusty Smodcast format and dedicate an entire program to all things RED STATE. Here’s what the site boasts:
Every week, learn all about horror upcoming horror flick RED STATE during a live, press-free conference! Non-specious movie news, directly from the filmmakers!
Yeah, can’t really f*ck with that. Candid updates, decent fart jokes, a bong load or two…sounds like an awesome new weekly ritual to indulge in. Do so starting RIGHT HERE.
As for juicy RED STATE nuggets unearthed in the first episode, Smith admitted the film is much more dependent on mood and tone than it is on plot. He also confided he shot on digital, sans storyboarding, with a budget of roughly $3 million.
Kyle Gallner, Melissa Leo, Haley Ramm, Anna Gunn (below), Kerry Bishe, Michael Angarano, Stephen Root, John Goodman and Kevin Pollak are all cast in the flick.
