Kiernan Shipka snags lead in Netflix’s reboot of Sabrina the Teenage Witch

Early last month we let you guys know that Netflix had picked up 2 seasons of a darker TV reboot of SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH, which was said to be in the vein of classic horror films such as ROSEMARY'S BABY and THE EXORCIST.

Today we have news that the lead role of Sabrina Spellman has been cast with Kiernan Shipka (MAD MEN, THE BLACKCOAT'S DAUGHTER) taking up the magic wand this time around.

Wait, does Sabrina use a wand? *Shrugs*

Executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa on the casting:

We’re all such huge fans of Kiernan’s work that when we started talking about who this new incarnation of Sabrina could be, her name was on everyone’s wish list. This is a darker, more macabre version of Sabrina, and we’re incredibly excited for people to see Kiernan make this iconic character her own.

Personally, I think Shipka was positively spooky in THE BLACKCOAT'S DAUGHTER, so I'm excited to see what the girl can do. Will this Netflix reboot be my cup of tea in the end? Meh. I guess we'll see.

Synopsis:

Untitled Sabrina Project imagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft. Tonally in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist, this adaptation finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature — half-witch, half-mortal — while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.

The series is written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and directed by Lee Toland Krieger. Executive Producers include Aguirre-Sacasa, Krieger, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Jon Goldwater.

We'll let you know once we hear more!
