Kirsten Dunst to star in futuristic action epic Civil War from Alex Garland

Ex Machina director Alex Garland is developing his next movie with A24 and it’s been reported that Kirsten Dunst is attached to star in the project.

Titled Civil War, the project is described as an action epic set in a near-future America. Unfortunately, all other plot details are being kept under wraps at the moment, but the pairing of Alex Garland and Kirsten Dunst is hard to ignore. In addition to Dunst, Civil War is also set to star Wagner Moura (Narcos), Stephen Henderson (Dune), and Cailee Spaeny (Mare of Easttown). Alex Garland will direct the film based on his original screenplay.

Thankfully, we won’t have to wait until the release of Civil War for our latest dose of Alex Garland as he wrapped production on Men last year. The horror drama stars Jessie Buckley (The Lost Daughter) as a woman who goes on a solo vacation to the English countryside after the death of her ex-husband.

Kirsten Dunst was most recently seen in The Power of the Dog, Jane Campion’s psychological western starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Jesse Plemons, and Kodi Smit-McPhee. Based upon the novel by Thomas Savage, the film is set in 1925 Montana and centers on Phil Burbank (Cumberbatch), a charismatic rancher who inspires fear and awe in those around him. When Phil’s brother George (Plemons) marries widower Rose (Dunst) and brings her home along with her son Peter (Smit-McPhee), Phil relentlessly torments them. But after bringing the boy under his wing, Phil finds himself exposed to the possibility of love. You can check out a review of The Power of the Dog from our own Chris Bumbray right here.
