Knowing Alex Proyas

I’m a big fan of Alex Proyas. Both THE CROW and DARK CITY are two of my favs (we’ll leave I, ROBOT out of the discussion), so hearing that Columbia-based Escape Artists has handed the directing reins of the long delayed project, KNOWING, to him hit me as excellent news. Except for one thing. The man at the helm previously was Richard Kelly (DONNIE DARKO) who I’m also a big fan of. So I mourn the passing of one exciting possiblity, while rejoicing in the birth of another. Quite phoenix-like of me don’t ya think?

Mythologically based ponderings aside, here’s the skinny on the tale:

It’s the story of a man who unearths a 1950s time capsule with children’s drawings predicting the future. One set of drawings depicts horrible events that already have come true, but one of the events has not occurred, and the man sets out to prevent it from happening.

Considering the sure hand Proyas has with moody atmosphere and a deep sense of unescapable dread, this has major prospects in my mind. The only thing that might make it better, and I’m just spitballing here, would be if Proyas and Kelly got a shot at making the flick. Not in an EXORCIST: THE BEGINNING kind of way. No, something classic. Something like BATTLE OF THE NETWORK STARS.
