We weren’t the only ones at Comic-Con getting news, Bloody Disgusting was there too, and had a little sit-down with THE WICKER MAN remake director Neil LaBute. Before you get too far down the story, there are spoilers if you haven’t seen the original, so go hunt down a copy and watch it. Don’t worry, I’ll be waiting…
Now, in the interview, when asked if there were going to be any sequels to this film, LaBute responded saying that “It’s not a movie where I look at it and say how many Wicker Men can we burn…the ending remains pure, that was the thing that everyone was very adamant about…that was one of the things that really sticks with you when you first see it, that they had the strength of their conviction to put this person in real jeopardy and there was no way out,”
LaBute elaborated, saying “there are certain things that I’ve done to the movie that allow for the possibility of [a sequel], you can always go back to that island outside… everyone’s still there so you could revisit the thing. But it’s something that plays really well one time because it’s built so much around this uniform trick that everyone has been working against [Nicolas Cage’s character]. When you know that, you’ve got to create a very different film for a second film…I don’t know that I’d want to revisit it myself because it works in a great sense of one of these short stories like ‘THE LOTTERY’ and it feels like the story is told to me.”
Well, that is LaBute’s opinion, but is it the studio’s? Probably not, since if the remake makes money, you can expect the thought of sequels to cross the studio bigwigs’ minds. To read the rest of the interview, head here.
