With LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, the world was introduced to the mind and madness of Wes Craven. The film is still pretty brutal after all these years, and still carries the stigma of being a ‘video nasty’ in the UK. Rumblings of a remake continue to lurk about, including the stinker screenplay by Mark Haslett that New Line dropped like a pair of soiled undies a while back.
Late yesterday, Dark Horizons received word from L’Hebdo Cinema that French directors David Moreau and Xavier Palud (the team who directed the French horror/mystery flick ILS aka THEM, which will be screened at this year’s Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal) were in talks to direct the remake. Whether this involves the Haslett screenplay is unclear, but considering that an unofficial remake released last year called CHAOS received pretty harsh words from critics (the film was directed by pro wrestler-turned-director David DeFalco, who lashed out at audience members during one particular screening), it might be safe to let this one remake rest in peace.
