Last House rolls this month!

Wow – maybe it’s the fact that I stumbled home at 5 in the a.m. this morning, but I had almost completely forgotten about the prospect of a LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT remake. it’s just so odd to me, and not in that “Screw them, they remake everything nowadays” kind of way. This one really seems like a tough sell: if they stray away from the original too much, they’ll be called sellouts and scumbags. If they hold true to the essence of the nasty material, they’ll have no kind of hit on their hands. And they’ll be called scumbags. Throw in the fact that even I, an admirer of serious horror, have no great urge to see such graphic depictions of torture and rape, and this is a big question mark of a movie…

Nevertheless, it’s still going forward, and Wes Craven talked to Fangoria about it. Seems as though Wes and co. are all about cutting corners, because LAST HOUSE will be shooting in South Africa (?!) this month – I’m guessing because the American dollar still has strength over there and it’s probably a cheap place to make flicks. In addition, Craven mentions that he hires foreign directors like LAST HOUSE’s Dennis Illadis, HILLS HAVE EYES’ Alexandre Aja, and HILLS HAVE EYES II’s Martin Weisz because they’re aren’t in the Director’s Guild – so costs go further down. Smart man – but though he lucked out with Aja, Weisz’s movie sucked nuts on every level (including the Craven-written screenplay). It will be interesting to see what Illadis, a director I’m completely unfamiliar with, does with this. And how it is reacted to.

To read more, head on over to FANGORIA! And keep checking back here for LAST HOUSE news – if they begin shooting this month we should be hearing talk of casting soon, right?
