Leonardo DiCaprio looking to bring Captain Planet to the big-screen

Captain Planet and the Planeteers, the environmentally themed 90's animated series which followed "five young people from around the world who were given magical rings that had the power to control natural elements. United, they can summon Captain Planet, a superhero who helps them fight against environmental evils," will be getting the big-screen treatment courtesy of Leonardo DiCaprio. I can't say that I was expecting to write that headline today.

THR reports that Paramount Pictures and Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way Productions are currently in talks for the rights to the Captain Planet TV series. Sony had been developing their own Captain Planet film but they let the rights lapse which set the stage for Leonardo DiCaprio to swoop in and save the day. The studio is also looking at Glen Powell (Scream Queens) and Jono Matt to pen the script. As for what the CAPTAIN PLANET movie will be about, THR's sources say that Matt and Powell have come up with a subversive take on the material which has it taking place "years after the adventures of the show, with the Captain now a washed-up has-been who needs the kids more than they need him." Sounds like it could work, in a 21 JUMP STREET sort of way, but I'm just hoping that they're able to get Don Cheadle on-board to play the title role. The power is mine, bitches!
