Leprechaun Returns snags hard R rating for “horror violence/gore” & more

It was just yesterday that we brought you guys the fun teaser poster (see it again below) for Syfy's upcoming direct sequel to writer-director Mark Jones' 1993 horror-comedy flick LEPRECHAUN starring Jennifer Aniston and Warwick Davis. Aniston and Davis will not be returning for this new film (boo-hoo, Davis, whatever, Aniston) but today we do have word the film will be keeping the R-rated spirit of the original films intact.

Yes, the MPAA as just slapped LEPRECHAUN RETURNS with an R-rating for "horror violence/gore and some sexual references," which sounds all good to me! That said, being that this new entry is directed by Steven Kostanski (THE VOID) I was hoping the film would sport a more extreme rating reason. But oh, well. I can live with "horror violence/gore and some sexual references." Bring it on!

Written by Suzanne Keilly (ASH VS EVIL DEAD) LEPRECHAUN RETURNS features Linden Porco (CHANNEL ZERO: BUTCHER'S BLOCK) taking over the titular role from Warwick Davis in the film which follows this fun synopsis:

The deadly, wisecracking Leprechaun is back in all his gory glory. When the sorority sisters of the Alpha Upsilon house decide to go green and use an old well as their water source, they unwittingly awaken a pint-sized, green-clad monster. The Leprechaun wants a pot of gold buried near the sorority house, but first, he must recover his powers with a killing spree—and only the girls of AU can stop him.

This reboot, not unlike Blumhouse's HALLOWEEN, ignores all the sequels following the original film and picks right up when the original left off, albeit 25 years later. Porco's prey includes Taylor Spreitler, Pepi Sonuga, Sai Bennett, and original LEPRECHAUN star Mark Holton. LEPRECHAUN RETURNS crawls its terrifying little ass out of a well in the middle of the woods and onto VOD and DVD via Lionsgate on December 11th

If you just can't wait until then, and you're feeling super froggy, you can always head on over to Amazon and snag a copy of the complete LEPRECHAUN series (from the 1993 original to the recent reboot LEPRECHAUN: ORIGINS) on Blu-ray RIGHT HERE. Enjoy!
