Let Freedom Ring

What I love about porn, I mean really love – beyond the beautiful chicks and the tight…um…dialogue, and of course the world of I didn’t know you could DO that! – is quite simply how it continues to protect our civil liberties. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m happy to let a little of my dignity slide if it means flying on a safe airplane, or even keeps the restaurant I’m knocking back beer and ribs at from getting blown up. However, in an era when certain folks like to sling the word freedom around like it only counts when you agree with them, well it warms the heart to see common sense win out over moral self-righteousness.

This week the obscenity case against Extreme Associates for their horror-porn flick FORCED ENTRY was dismissed. Who brought the suit? The US Attorney General’s office back when it was led by (insert your own descriptive adjective) John Ashcroft. Seems they felt in early 2002 that terrorists weren’t interesting enough, so they went after fringe porn elements too. Well done guys!

Now this is not to say that I’m jumping on the FORCED ENTRY bandwagon. I mean, hey, in the interest of accurate reporting, you know I had to check out their website. And quite frankly it ain’t my thing. But that’s supposed to be the beauty of the US. It’s not all about our thing. It’s about having the right to be consenting adults who are trusted to know what works for them in the privacy of their own abodes.

So where does it all leave us? In a far better place my friends. Because now the term horror-porn won’t get splashed across the nation’s newspapers to designate the day that personal freedom died. Sure it wouldn’t have hurt porn much, but it might have taken a chunk out of our beloved genre work. And we can’t have that now can we?
