Sure, it’s fashionable to be pissed off and dismissive about the onslaught of remakes coming our way – and with good reason. Mostly because it’s my opinion that most of these cannot possibly recapture the magic, fun, innovation and spirit of the films they’re based on. Can TOTAL RECALL truly be improved upon? Do we need Steven Spielberg to show us how OLDBOY should really be done? Is there a human f*cking being alive – outside of a studio exec – who is thinking “Yes, I need to see THE FUGITIVE updated!”
It’s sickening. And although it may not be as insulting as the others, the fact that LET THE RIGHT ONE IN – a film that came out less than a year ago and has already claimed the hearts of numerous film-lovers – is going into the Remake-O-Matic makes me comically curl up my fists and shake them at the computer in a silent display of frustration. This movie JUST came out, and a good deal of people haven’t even seen it yet… I know, some will tell me that the remake will bring more attention to the original, and eventually people will be able to decide for themselves which is the better film… But that’s avoidable. Everything that’s unique about the flick is almost certain to disappear from this Hollywood product.
Anyhoo, I had begun to hope this thing wasn’t really happening, but Production Weekly has just put forth the word that Matt Reeves (CLOVERFIELD) will begin shooting in May on the remake – which is now called LET ME IN. This has lame written all over it. Months ago it was given a JANUARY 15th, 2010 release – naturally, the studio had assigned it a date way before pre-production even began…
