Licorice Pizza: Trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson’s coming-of-age movie soars

The first trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson’s Licorice Pizza is here, and it looks delicious. The film is a coming-of-age period piece set in the ’70s, and it stars Alana Haim, the youngest of the HAIM sisters, as its main protagonist. Joining Haim for what looks like a bold and emotionally charged drama are Cooper Hoffman (son of the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman), Bradley Cooper, Tom Waits, Sean Penn, and Benny Safdie. The cast also includes Ben Stiller, John C. Reilly, Christopher Walken, Maya Rudolph, though they do not appear in the trailer.

Licorice Pizza is the story of Alana Kane and Gary Valentine growing up, running around, and falling in love in the San Fernando Caller, 1973. Written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, the film tracks the treacherous navigation of first love.

Set to David Bowie’s “Life on Mars?”, the trailer evokes a time in one’s life when curiosity and mischief ruled over better judgment. It makes me long for warm summer nights, the smell of old vinyl, and rabblerousing through the streets. It makes me think of my first love, who I met at Lollapolooza in 1997. We used to get up to all kinds of crazy sh*t. Ah, to be young and reckless once again.

Licorice Pizza is coming soon, but only in theaters.
