This isn’t the worst thing I’ve heard in a long time, but the fact that there’s still a chance that Park Chan-Wook’s OLDBOY might get the Hollywood makeover seriously, seriously depresses me. I’m not all that familiar with Justin Lin’s work but after hearing (or reading) what he has to say about remaking OLDBOY, I respect the guy. And it ain’t easy to respect someone who thinks a fourth FAST AND THE FURIOUS movie would be a great idea. Talking about being involved with the project, he said “That was a situation where the studio had purchased a property and I love the original movie… Everybody has their opinions on remakes and if the goal was to basically make a Xerox copy, then I wouldn’t want to make that. It’s a tough movie to remake. It’s a big challenge. In the last year, if anything, I’ve been protecting it a little bit, because if it’s not the right situation, then I’m probably not the right guy for it… That was one where I was very protective and if one element wasn’t correct—that’s where I’m standing. If it’s not totally there, it’s not worth it. I personally haven’t been able to find the right fit nor the right rhythm, so we’ll see. I honestly will probably move on from that.”
If there’s one foreign film that I never want to be remade it’s OLDBOY. That film is just about perfect in my eyes. And from this it sounds like the studio might go ahead with this, just with a different director; presumably someone who doesn’t have this much respect for the project. Which sucks. I bet Eli Roth or someone would snap this up and just go nuts. Gahh… what do you guys think?
