Top 10 Supporting Characters That Deserve Their Own Movies

Supporting characters are vital to any story. Hell, they even get their own Oscar because without them a film could fall flat. Often times, supporting characters steal the limelight. While this does not always make them worthy of getting their own feature films, there are a lot who could carry their own movie. Here is our ranking of the ten supporting characters most deserving of their own solo feature film. See how many you agree with and if we missed anyone. Leave your comments in the talk backs below.

#1 – Lando Calrissian

With Disney mining every corner of the STAR WARS franchise with rumored solo films for Yoda, Boba Fett, and even Obi-wan Kenobi, we have not heard a single word about the great Billy Dee Williams returning to his fan favorite role. Lando Calrissian has appeared on the Rebels animated series but is very deserving of his own feature film about his early days before joining the Rebel Alliance. Of any characters in the history of film, this is one that we deserve to see more of on the big screen.

#2 – Albus Dumbledore

FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM name-dropped the Headmaster of Hogwarts in the latest trailer for the HARRY POTTER spin-off, but it definitely would not be the worst thing to see the early days of the great wizard. We saw some of Dumbledore’s younger years in the main series and actor Michael Gambon could easily pick up his wand once again and show us more backstory on the mysterious magical professor.

#3 – Alejandro Gillick

SICARIO would not have been nearly as buzzworthy a film if not for Benicio Del Toro stealing every scene he was in. That chilling final act alone cemented the need for his own spin-off which is already in the gestation stage, with Del Toro, Emily Blunt, and Josh Brolin all returning, but I will believe it when I actually see it. Del Toro was the redeeming factor in that movie for me and I would easily watch a movie comprised entirely of his vengeance seeking hitman.

#4 – Black Widow

Rumors of a Hawkeye/Black Widow film have been bouncing around since THE AVENGERS hit theaters but nothing has ever come of it. Scarlett Johansson has been front and center in six films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and got some backstory in AGE OF ULTRON. Still, there is enough of her mysterious past that could fill a movie, especially one that could be combined with her search for Bruce Banner. Now that would make for a cool movie.

#5 – Rocket Raccoon and Groot

While each member of the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY could headline their own solo film, a prequel following the diminutive Rocket and his personal houseplant/muscle Groot has the most potential. Their work as bounty hunters definitely would have kept them busy in the years before they met Peter Quill and there are tons of stories that could be worthy of a big screen adaptation.

#6 – Tanner Bolt

Tyler Perry isn’t exactly the name you would expect to headline his own film that doesn’t feature a cross-dressing Southern woman, but here he is. While his solo outing as Alex Cross didn’t work, Perry stole every scene he appeared in as part of David Fincher’s GONE GIRL. While there is no novel continuing the story of Tanner Bolt, his experience as a fixer of sorts could easily be a launching pad for another film.

#7 – Staff Sgt. Sean Dignam

As much as I consider THE DEPARTED to be overrated, it definitely built a world that could be explored in additional films. While a straight sequel may not work, a tangential plot focused on Mark Wahlberg’s foul-mouthed and duplicitous cop could make for some good cinema. Scorsese has a lot of projects on his plate but seeing him work with Wahlberg again may be enticing enough to happen.

#8 – Jesus Quintana

A spin-off focused on John Turturro’s scene-stealing pederast has been rumored for years but has yet to come together. While I would prefer to see Turturro reteam with The Coen Brothers, I would be fine seeing a story helmed by Turturro himself. This is a goofy character who could make for a very dark comedy. Dios mio, man. Liam better be in the movie, too!

#9 – Anton Chigurh

The Grim Reaper of the Modern West, Javier Bardem’s chilling villain with the Dora the Explorer haircut is the personification of evil. While The Coens and novelist Cormac McCarthy are content to leave Chigurh an unexplored character, he could easily be the focus of another film. Think Hannibal Lecter with some Latin flair.

#10 – Megan Price

Melissa McCarthy has been a very divisive actress in recent years. Most folks either love her or hate her. She is clearly a funny lady when she isn’t forcing herself to be a spectacle on screen. Her most balanced role to date was in BRIDESMAIDS where she stole the show as the butch Megan. This is a character that is signature McCarthy and unique enough that she could carry a feature all her own.
