Update: New Line has added three new fighters to director Simon McQuoid's MORTAL KOMBAT reboot with the hiring of SUPERGIRL's Mehcad Brooks, THOR: RAGNAROK's Tadanobu Asano, and Australian newcomer Sisi Stringer. Asano, an actor made famous by many of his Japanese film credits, will play Lord Raiden, the Japanese God of Thunder. Raiden has been a member of the MK family since Midway's release of the first game in the franchise, Mortal Kombat (1992). As for Sisi Stringer, she will enter the fight as Mileena, a clone of Kitana, created by Shang Tsung's sorcery in his flesh pits for Shao Khan, using Tarkatan blood, and Edenian physiology. She is a fierce warrior made even more deadly by her ability to wield sais and long swords with the greatest of ease.

With regard to who the aforementioned actors will be playing, Mehcad is poised to star as Jackson 'Jax' Briggs, a Special Forces blowhard who as of the Mortal Kombat 3 video game, has bionic armor-plating that covers and protects both of his arms. The 'Jax' character has been featured in several of the Mortal Kombat games, and was later joined by Jaqui Briggs, his daughter, in Mortal Kombat X

The Netherrealm is all abuzz today with news that POWER RANGERS actor Ludi Lin is negotiating for the part of Liu Kang in New Line's MORTAL KOMBAT reboot. The Chinese-Canadian actor who recently appeared as Captain Murk for James Wan's AQUAMAN is no stranger to matial arts-related cinema, particularly after playing Lance, a kung fu master, in the "Striking Vipers" episode for BLACK MIRROR's fifth season. So far, THE RAID's Joe Taslim is the only confirmed cast member of the new MORTAL KOMBAT film project. Taslim signed onto the Simon McQuoid-directed feature in early July, and is set to play Sub-Zero, a formidable warrior able to control ice.

Liu Kang arrived on the Mortal Kombat scene in 1992 as one of seven playable characters included in the original arcade game. New Line is keeping the plot of MORTAL KOMBAT under wraps for the time being, but Kang was a major focus of the first game in the franchise. Known for his flying bicycle kicks and Bruce Lee-like appearance, Kang has the ability to call upon an ancient dragon to devour his wavering foes. As the story goes, Kang entered the Mortal Kombat tournament as part of an effort to keep Earthrealm free of the influence of the evil Shang Tsung. Throughout his Mortal Kombat history, Liu Kang has died, defected to the opposing side, and rekindled his relationship with Kung Lao, Kang's best friend and fellow Shaolin warrior.

Produced by James Wan with a screenplay being penned by Greg Russo, MORTAL KOMBAT is currently in pre-production. The reboot is expected to begin filming later this year in Adelaide, but will then be moved to a larger location set in South Australia.

MORTAL KOMBAT will be looking to perform a fatalitiy on the box office when it opens in theaters on March 5, 2021.
