I don’t know about you guys but I can dig on a genre flick that makes me bug out even when I’ve yet to even hit the bowl. Something like that is nothing short of impressive. And one upcoming film that seems like it might do just that is Panos Cosmatos’ BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW.
Now the name should ring a bell, considering we’ve talked about it here at AITH before, but don’t worry if it doesn’t, I’ll gladly catch you guys up right quick. The flick stars Michael Rogers, Marilyn Norry, Eva Allan (below) and Scott Hylands. It’s a Canadian/Italian production that reads a little something like this:
BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW is a Reagan-era fever dream inspired by hazy childhood memories of midnight movies and Saturday morning cartoons. Cosmatos brings a bold, Kubrickian vision to the screen in stunning detail in this sci-fi fable of a young woman imprisoned in an experimental laboratory and the enigmatic scientist who is her captor. Set in a futuristic 1983, Elena finds herself held against her will in a mysterious facility under the watchful eye of the sinister Dr. Barry Nyle. Pushed to her limits, Elena is left with no choice but to navigate an escape from her labyrinthine prison, in the process revealing its hidden secrets.
At once creatively futuristic and hypnotically retro, BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW evokes the spirit of classic 1970s and 80s science fiction films through its vintage-inspired chromatic cinematography, elaborate set pieces, and an authentically retro sci-fi score composed entirely on analog synthesizers by Jeremy Schmidt. With all the makings of a cult classic, BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW is sure to absorb viewers in its unique dystopian futurescape and marks the trippy, exciting debut of a promising new talent in the science fiction world.
Now that we’re all caught up let me hit you all with the news today coming out of Screen Daily! Seems the flick just scored big at Cannes with Magnet Releasing stepping up and snatching the US rights to this little diddy. Of course this is great news because that means we’re one step closer to seeing this shite here in the US.
