Maika Monroe lands the female lead in Independence Day 2

We may not have asked for it but Roland Emmerich's sequel to INDEPENDENCE DAY is certainly pulling out all the stops when it comes to scooping up as many actors from the first film as it can; we've got Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Brent Spiner, Vivica Fox, and Judd Hirsch reprising their roles from the original film with ID4 newcomers Jessie Usher, Liam Hemsworth, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Joey King joining them. Quite the ensemble and we're not done yet, Roland Emmerich took to Twitter today and announced that the female lead of the INDEPENDENCE DAY sequel will be Maika Monroe.

You may recognize Maika Monroe from IT FOLLOWS and THE GUEST, both films which have received quite a lot of buzz in the last year. Monroe will play the daughter of Bill Pullman's character as well as the love interest to Hemsworth’s character. I'm still not sold on why INDEPENDENCE DAY warranted a sequel, especially twenty years after the original, but there's always room in my heart for another dose of alien invasion destruction porn. Bring it on Mr. Emmerich!

The sequel to INDEPENDENCE DAY will arrive in theaters on June 24, 2016.
