Mambo now Repo Men

In a move that seems more than just odd, but downright misleading, Universal Pictures has announced that it has changed the name of it’s upcoming organ harvesting sci-fi/horror thriller from REPOSSESSION MAMBO to REPO MEN. Say what????

I was never a fan of the original REPOSSESSION MAMBO titale to begin with, so changing it is nothing of concern to me–I actually think it was a smart move to make it shorter and possibly a little more catchy. But REPO MEN is too much like REPO MAN, allowing people to think that it might actually be a sequel to the classic Emilio Estevez flick.

Given the film stars Jude Law, Forest Whitaker, and Alice Braga, and that it’s probably bigger than the original REPO MAN ever was, that doesn’t mean people won’t compare the two, even if it’s clear the film’s are unrelated. REPO MEN? It just sounds like such a rip off.

As a refresher, REPO MEN is set in the near future when artificial organs can be bought on credit, it revolves around a man who struggles to make the payments on a heart he has purchased. He must therefore go on the run before said ticker is repossessed.

Oh, and if you haven’t connected the dots, the new title is quasi-close to REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA, a film that actually does have a similar concept and storyline. It’s bad enough the two films deal with the same crap, it’s even worse they now both start with REPO. Just wait until they’re both on DVD and in rental stores everywhere.. that’ll really mess things up.

REPOSSESSION MAMBO is now REPO MEN, and is scheduled to hit theaters in the winter of 2010. Just enough time to change the title again for something a little more original.
