In September of last year, Mr. Ammon let you know that a remake of the classic (?) 80s slasher MANIAC was potentially on the way. Well, now it would appear as though there’s nothing “potential” about it – it’s happening.
So said original director Bill Lustig at a recent event, which a Bloody Disgusting writer was attending. Lustig revealed that indeed, the project is up and running: “We already made a deal for the remake of ‘Maniac’ – there is a remake of ‘Maniac’ thats on its way, believe it or not. That deal is already closed.” Lustig, however, also mentioned that he’d have very little involvement with the project.
The only reason I can think of for even remaking the movie is so you can use the title. There’s a billion “mad killer on the loose” movies out there, but only one called MANIAC; I’d be surprised if whoever is remaking it will be sticking very closely to the original film’s ghastly ideas and images. (Although I could be wrong; look at LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, which I thought was going to be completely neutered but turned out to be fairly disturbing – at least by Hollywood standards.)
Hopefully we’ll learn more about the remake soon enough. For more from Lustig, head on over HERE.
