Marry Me: Jennifer Lopez & Owen Wilson rom-com shifts dates again

Another release date delay has occurred due to the COVID-19 pandemic which spells more bad news for exhibitors. It has been announced that the Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson romantic comedy Marry Me has been delayed until 2022.

The film was originally slated to come out this very weekend to take advantage of the Valentine's Day crowd but last year the film was pushed to May 14, 2021. The film will now hit screens on February 11, 2002, a full year off its original date. Universal Pictures has been good about releasing films during the pandemic (Trolls World Tour) but they're very confident in the musical driven comedies' potential at the box office. The film according to "Deadline", is one of Lopez and Wilson’s highest tested features in preview screenings and Universal wants the film to be able to thrive during what they believe will be a healthier box office climate. Marry Me will now compete with Tom Holland's Uncharted and an untitled 20th Century Studios film on its new date, which will also take advantage of the 2022 Valentine's Day weekend.

Marry Me follows music superstars Kat Valdez (Lopez) and Bastian (Maluma) who are getting married before a global audience of fans. Plans change when Kat learns, seconds before her vows, that Bastian has been unfaithful, and she decides to marry Charlie (Owen Wilson), a stranger in the crowd, instead.

By the way, if Universal Pictures was willing to shift Marry Me out of the May release period, I'd be very concerned about Fast 9. They clearly think the May release time period won't be back to normal and it wouldn't surprise me if that film made one last move on the calendar to make sure it's in the clear. The TV spot that dropped during the Super Bowl didn't announce its current release date and simply said it was "coming soon to theaters." This gives Universal some room to move the release date again if necessary.

Do YOU think it was wise to move Marry Me from its May release date?
